According to the Christian faith, the Bible is not an ordinary book, but the Word of God, which has been given to mankind to be followed in all generations and in all situations of life. The earliest biblical writings are more than 3,000 years old and date from a time when people not only could not read and write, but thought in very different contexts and lived in very different realities from those of today.
That is why these books (there are 72 in all) were written not for private reading but for communal listening, and why from the beginning the Lord also appointed His elect whom He gave the task of interpreting the Word.
When Jesus chose the apostles to "hunt people" for the kingdom of God, their first specific task becomes to proclaim the Word. In doing so, they become first and foremost proclaimers and interpreters of the Bible, and to do this, he endows them with the ability to bring strength to people who then want to live this Word of God - and to do so in the sacraments.
In order to interpret the Bible, a priest must devote himself to it throughout his life, studying it and striving to live it with those to whom he presents it. This is not easy and requires honest preparation and prayer, so that he does not proclaim his opinions and his assumptions, but proven and authentic doctrine.
