Relive one of the most dramatic events in the modern history of Svatá Hora through an exhibition that explores the circumstances surrounding the fire and its devastating consequences.
On Thursday, April 27, 1978, thick smoke began to rise above Svatá Hora. What started as a small fire lit by children near the covered staircase quickly turned into a devastating blaze. The flames engulfed the roof of the covered staircase and quickly spread toward the historic Baroque complex.
The massive fire threatened one of the most important Marian pilgrimage sites in Bohemia at the time. Thanks to the efforts of firefighters and others, the complete destruction of the complex was prevented.
An exhibition commemorating this tragic event details its course, the circumstances surrounding the fire, and the story of Svatá Hora at a time when it faced widespread destruction.
The exhibition was organized by the Roman Catholic parish of the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary at Svatá Hora in cooperation with the Příbram State District Archives.
The exhibition is open to the public during the information center’s operating hours. Admission is by donation.
